How Covenant's Kindergarten cut-off works

At Covenant Christian School, a child can start Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if they turn five on or before 31 May of that year. Children who turn five after that date wait until the following year. The NSW government cut-off is 31 July, but Covenant applies an earlier 31 May cut-off.

Schooling is compulsory once a child turns six, so every child must be enrolled in Kindergarten by the start of the school year in which they have their sixth birthday. Children born between January and 31 May therefore have a choice of two possible starting years, while children born from June to December have only one.

In New South Wales, Kindergarten is the first formal year of primary school — it is not the same as the pre-school year that some other states call Kindergarten.

Eligibility is only part of the picture. Readiness for school also depends on social, emotional and developmental maturity — something our Registrar and Early Learning staff are always happy to talk through with you.
